HeidelbergCement's shareholder, Merckle, offers private wealth to secure bank loans
(FRANKFURT, Germany) -- Billionaire German industrialist Adolf Merckle has offered to put up some of his private wealth as collateral for bank loans he needs to nail down by Tuesday night to escape a liquidity squeeze.
'The Merckle family has offered significant assets from its private wealth as security,' his son Ludwig said in a statement late on Monday. 'We are still prepared to work out a solution for this financial situation together with banks in these difficult times.'
The agreement by about 30 banks to postpone loan payments ends at midnight (2300 GMT) on Tuesday.
Merckle's VEM investment vehicle, which owns generic drug maker Ratiopharm and a stake in cement maker HeidelbergCement , said on Nov. 21 its moratorium gave it two weeks to overhaul its finances as it tries to secure bridge loans.
Two people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Nov. 24 that Merckle, who in 2007 was ranked by Forbes as one of the world's 50 richest people, had pledged to sell at least part of Ratiopharm as a precondition for the moratorium.
Banking sources say Merckle lost 400 million euros ($504.3 million) with dud bets on carmaker Volkswagen shares and other trades, forcing him to seek to raise liquidity.
